Members of the church are at the centre of a ‘super-spreading event’ which has seen dozens of people infected.

Health officials in the country’s fourth-largest city Daegu believe they are all linked to a 61-year-old woman who tested positive for the virus earlier this week.

Mayor Kwon Young-jin told reporters of the cases: ‘We are in an unprecedented crisis. We’ve asked them to stay at home isolated from their families.’South Korea’s coronavirus numbers nearly doubled on Thursday with almost half of them in a cluster centred on a sect in Daegu Photos showed empty streets and deserted shopping malls as many of the city’s 2.5 million residents holed up indoors.The Korean Centre for Disease Control said the unidentified woman at the heart of the spread had been in contact with 166 people who were subsequently asked to self-quarantine.
