Softening Brexit can only happen if Starmer takes baby steps
Some pro-Europeans are pushing the PM to go further into Brexit resets without acknowledging how disastrous this could be to their cause
The Green Party, whose conference has already happened, cemented its formal support to join the single market and Customs Union, with a view to full EU membershipThe Greens, who might only have four MPs, are joined in this view across the political spectrum, most vocally by the Liberal Democrats and SNP. Labour officials privately admit that a chunk of their MPs hope Starmer ends up pushing for single market membership before the end of this parliament.
Britain, meanwhile, would become a rule-taker, which means regulatory cooperation and essentially falling in line with EU rules – something that the Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority both previously opposed. No amount of “political will” would make this an easy sell to the public.has been failure or would now support rejoining the single market.
