Edith Wade left school at 16 to work for the Lincolnshire Echo and later went on to work at Avro

A remarkable woman who worked with Lancaster Bombers during the war is turning 100 years old. Edith Wade was born on December 30 in 1924 and was brought up in the Eastgate area of Lincoln. In her teens, she would enjoy skating on the frozen River Witham.

Edith very much enjoyed her first years at the Echo but, as the war was under way, she was called for military service and went to work at Avro in Lincoln - the designer and maker of the great Lancaster Bomber. She remembers the damaged planes coming back to Lincoln where the parts were recovered and catalogued for future use.

Edith left the Echo in 1948 to work for the agricultural engineering firm of Clayton Dewandre as a secretary. She remembers the men coming home from the war looking for employment and joining the firm. Not being one to sit at home, Edith went back to work in 1961 for the third time at the Lincolnshire Echo, again under Mr Geoghen who had returned from the war. This was in the printing department where she remained until retirement.
