This Christmas Eve, we take a look back at a memorable day in 1996 when hundreds of parents queued outside Clayton Square’s Disney store in Liverpool hoping to get their hands on the must-have Toy Story toy, Buzz Lightyear.
Christmas Eve 2024 is officially upon us and we're only hours away from December 25 and all the celebrations that come with it. But before that, as it's a nostalgic time of year, we wanted to transport you back to this day in 1996 when hundreds of parents queued outside Clayton Square's Disney shop in Liverpool . The shop, incredibly popular for years, sold everything from Disney ’s character toys to clothes, collectibles and more.
Before online shopping we know and use today, people had no choice but to stand and wait in hopes they would be one of the lucky ones to take the Toy Story toy home. At the time, mums and dads waited 'for infinity and beyond' to get their hands on a coveted Buzz Lightyear toy and some did not go home empty-handed.Queues formed at the Clayton Square store just after 5am when news came that the site was the only one in the North West to get hold of the toy before Christmas. Parents had originally been told to come back on December 28 for the £24.99 toy - but later manager Carl Bartlett was told that a consignment of 1,000 would be arriving ready for business. The Disney store later moved to Liverpool ONE - but in 2021, it was reported that all Disney stores in the UK were set to close by September that year. Today, our nearest flagship stores are in London’s Oxford Street and in Dublin.
