The WW2 pilot who won the Grand National
, Tony Hoskins, said: "Mervyn was born at Llwynwhilwg Farm, on the Penyfan Road, Llanelli, to Herbert, a farmer, and Ann, a relative of the Kidwelly Horse trainers.
"Mervyn rode 'Bogskar' to victory in a Grand National trial at Gatwick earlier in 1940, but was meant to have returned to his unit by the time of the actual Aintree Race. The intelligence they gathered was instrumental in the planning of major operations such as D-Day, the Dam Busters Raid, the monitoring of the Bismarck and Tirpitz, and locating the site of the V1 and V2 rocket launching site at Peenemünde.
