Independent traders have seen significant drops in footfall since free parking was axed
Businesses on a main road in a Nottinghamshire town have expressed their concern following a decrease in footfall since free parking was axed. Traders on Chilwell Road, Beeston, have said that the removal of free parking for an hour in the council car parks in January has made a "massive impact" on footfall.
"The two car parks on this road were put in specifically to replace the off-street parking that we lost to make room for the tram and we were assured at the time that our clients would get an hour of free parking. Now we feel like the goalposts have moved and have been working to put our case forward to the council."
"They worry about parking and maybe haven't got a pound so it just seems silly to have to pay when you're just going to pop in and out. We've noticed a lot of people are taking a risk and parking in the laybys and some of them are going to the pharmacies where they can park more easily, but even so, they still have to pay.
He said: "I can think of quite a few regular customers who are not coming at the moment because it's too far for them to walk. The evening parking is also ridiculous because we are open some evenings for board game nights. "I've not made the rent since the second week in January, that's how bad it's got. It's never been busy, but it's definitely gone down now - I used to at least get the rent. I think I'll just retire," he said.
