It’s Universal you have to thank for the go-to visual that sweeps into your mind: a suave, tall, pale man in a cloak and formal dress with a prominent widow’s peak and thick Hungarian accent. But crucially, the balance has been struck between old and new and going a bit more boldly in a different direction when it comes to a classic character rather than chucking a boatload of money and one of Hollywood’s highest-paid leading men at it and hoping that will magically sell the film – and even a full franchise.
