A crucial vote is set for Monday evening on an issue impacting many New Yorkers: rent increases.
Monday, June 17, 2024 2:49PMA final vote on those increases is set to take place at Hunter College.
The Rent Guidelines Board will vote on proposed lease adjustments for rent-stabilized apartments, lofts, and hotels. Mayor Eric Adams says the board has a difficult task: striking a balance between protecting tenants from infeasible rent increases, and ensuring property owners can afford to make necessary repairs and upkeep.Two-year leases: rent would jump again by 4-6.5%.
Both City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and the mayor put out statements saying the high end of the preliminary rent guidelines board increases are too high. Mayor Adams said "a 6.5% increase goes far beyond what is reasonable to ask tenants to take on at this time" while Council Speaker Adams said the rent guidelines board must "limit increases."Protests are expected ahead of the vote, but any disruptions will not be tolerated, according to officials.----------
