Jamaal Bowman has been charged with a misdemeanor and will have to pay a fine forin a Capitol building as lawmakers tried to pass a funding bill before a government shutdown deadline in September.
He is expected to plead guilty and the charges will be dropped if he formally apologizes to Capitol police, pays a $1,000 fine and completes three months of probation.The New York lawmaker said it was a mistake and that he was in a rush to vote but tried to go through a door that was closed and pulled the fire alarm thinking it would open it.while trying to get from his office to the main Capitol building.Rep.
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., called for Bowman to be punished and compared the action to the Jan. 6 riot. “I am responsible for activating a fire alarm, I will be paying the fine issued, and look forward to these charges being ultimately dropped," Bowman said. After the fire alarm incident, the House swiftly approved a 45-day funding bill to keep federal agencies open.
