The full replacement of an historic set of Nottinghamshire mining headstocks that were posing a danger to public safety remains on track after a crucial set of works were completed. The headstocks were part of the Brinsley Colliery, off Mansfield Road near Brinsley, which operated from 1842 until 1934 and counted miners including the father of D.H. Lawrence amongst its ranks.
The headstocks will be completely rebuilt by the end of 2025 and improvements in the nature area surrounding the structure will include new ponds and the creation of a wildflower meadow. Broxtowe Borough Council has now shared an update on the project, which is set to cost up to £220,000.The council said in a statement on Monday : "Work continues to progress at the Brinsley Headstocks site. The investigative works at the headstocks has now been completed.
"Three hibernacula have also been created for amphibians and small mammals to use throughout the winter to protect themselves from the cold. You can also look forward to seeing more native plants in the spring which will be planted with the support of the Friends of Brinsley Headstocks and local volunteers."
