'Fires in empty buildings are a particular worry'
Anti-social behaviour, fires, knife crime, violence and child exploitation issues across the Lancaster and Morecambe district are highlighted in a new report for city councillors.
The report has been produced for Lancaster City Council's Overview and Scrutiny Committee, which is discussing the area's Community Safety Partnership next week. The partnership includes the city council, police, fire service and social housing organisations. This autumn, a number of public spaces protection orders for parts of Lancaster, Morecambe and Heysham were extended for three years by the city council. These give the authorities extra powers in specific zones to deal with issues such as shouting, swearing or other bad behaviour; people taking intoxicating substances including ‘legal highs’ and people drinking alcohol in a prohibited area. If people refuse to comply, they can be arrested and face a £1,000 fine in court, if convicted.
"The ward areas considered to have the most incidents of serious violence correlate with Lancaster city centre, Morecambe town centre and Morecambe's west end. In terms of the estimated cost of serious violence, the Lancaster district has the fourth-highest cost."
