Core backing for independence is clearly very strong, and arguably solidifying around a slightly higher baseline than has previously been the case.The challenge for the SNP at their annual conference is to try to put the Rutherglen defeat firmly behind them while showing they are well up for the fight at the coming UK General Election and charting a clear course forward when it comes to policy on independence.
That is not least because those propitious circumstances may arrive sooner than anyone expects. Who, given the turmoil of the past decade –, Trump, Covid, war in Ukraine and much else besides – could confidently predict how the next few years will pan out? All of this is emblematic of how all UK parties and Westminster-based debate – not just the right-wing Tory elements for whom it is their creed – have come to march to the drumbeat of a particularly strident British nationalism.
