In a multicenter clinical trial, patients with early-stage Parkinson’s disease treated with lixisenatide, a drug currently used for the treatment of diabetes, showed improvement in their motor scores compared with those on placebo.

Patients who received the drug reported improvements in scores on the Movement Disorder Society–Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale compared with those receiving placebo, as assessed in the on-medication state at 12 months. Although most secondary efficacy outcomes for the trial were no different between the two arms, adverse gastrointestinal effects were reported more frequently in the intervention arm than in the placebo arm.
