Researchers demonstrate how ELDs can be accessed over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connections to take control of a truck, manipulate data, and spread malware between vehicles. The vulnerabilities in ELDs pose a significant security risk as most heavy-duty trucks are required to be equipped with these devices.

In a paper presented at the 2024 Network and Distributed System Security Symposium, researchers demonstrated how Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) can be accessed over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connections to take control of a truck, manipulate data, and spread malware between vehicles. The vulnerabilities in ELDs pose a significant security risk as most heavy-duty trucks are required to be equipped with these devices.

The researchers highlighted three vulnerabilities in ELDs and conducted testing on a vulnerable ELD installed in a 2014 Kenworth T270 Class 6 research truck
