Local residents in Bacup are protesting a plan to expand a waste transfer station near their homes, citing concerns about smell, noise, vermin, and potential environmental damage.
Fed-up residents are launching a huge leaflet campaign opposing a planning application for an upgrade to a controversial waste transfer site near their home. Charlie Codd and neighbours on Rochdale Road, Bacup say they have been blighted by issues of smell, noise and vermin coming from the Rossendale Council’s Henrietta Street Waste Transfer Station.
He said he will be delivering the leaflets with the help of other residents to around 500 businesses and homes in central Bacup to raise awareness about the council's plan for the site. He said: “By giving out these leaflets I believe we can meet more people this way and make other people aware of this planning application. I don’t think the wider community know about it and it is only right that they know and have a chance to make their comments.” The proposed change of the site layout includes the demolition of some existing buildings to be replaced with a single larger unit which will include waste storage bays. Other proposals outlined in the planning application include overnight parking for refuse collection vehicles, installation of vehicle weighbridge, external storage area, parking and internal circulation space. The planning, design and access statement states it is anticipated 50,000 tonnes of waste per annum will be processed including; food and general waste, paper and card, glass, cans and plastics, street sweepings, waste electrical and electronic equipment, white goods, scrap metal and tyres. Mr Codd continued: “The proposed development is within 20m of the River Irwell so there could be a chance of leachate as runoff could be discharged to the adjacent river. “The current waste transfer station is unacceptably near residential properties and so the proposed enlarged site will be considerably closer to these properties. The site will butt right up against the metal fence five metres behind my hous
