Residents of remote Australian territory concerned years without elected council could lead to lack of democracy

With no elected council or state member of parliament, and a federal MP 1,000 kilometres away, residents on this island say they are facing a democratic deficit.

It was replaced by a council — which was later also dismissed under the LNP government in 2021 due to major financial issues.

However, the island's status as an external territory means it also does not have a representative in Queensland parliament. Mr Sanderson said residents had been encouraged by dealings with Labor's new Minister for Territories, Kristy McBain.Michael Colreavy was appointed as Norfolk Island's council administrator in 2021.

One of the issues the administrators had to overcome was the issue of dealing with waste – which under previous leadership — was burned and tipped into the sea.
