On March 5, the Peapack and Gladstone Borough Council in Somerset County voted to allow federal wildlife officials to round up and euthanize the geese with carbon dioxide.

Peapack and Gladstone Borough Council members on March 5 voted to allow federal wildlife officials to round up and euthanize geese. Officials say Canada geese have overpopulated Liberty Park, but some residents disagree.A group of New Jersey residents on Tuesday night plan to protest a decision by the Peapack and Gladstone Borough Council to allow federal officials to euthanize a Canada geese population that officials say has gotten out of control.

After gassing, “it takes almost 30 minutes for them to suffocate. It’s not very humane,” DiCarlo said. Murphy said local officials have tried non-lethal methods over the years, including the hiring of “geese police” who spread organic compounds in the park and tried to chase the birds using dogs and lights.

“The disease has been found in wild ducks and geese, as well as in a few backyard and commercial poultry flocks,” the USDA reported. DiCarlo speculated some in the borough are more interested in attracting new merchants and residents to a redevelopment area near the park, where luxury homes and businesses are under construction.
