Discover how to revitalize your towels using common kitchen ingredients. This easy method eliminates soap build-up and restores absorbency, leaving your towels feeling soft and fluffy again.

Towels losing their softness and comfort can be frustrating, but there's no need to discard them thanks to a straightforward restoration trick for just one wash. Tom Ceconi from Heritage Park Laundry has discovered why towels often harden after being washed with fabric softener . He explained: 'Using liquid fabric softener , which is oil- and petroleum-based and leaves a slick coating on towel fibres, making them less absorbent.

' The absorption quality of towels means they easily trap that waxy layer applied by fabric softeners, a residue that standard machine washing won't get rid of fully. Consequently, soap accumulates in the terrycloth causing them to turn stiff and stinky despite recent cleaning. But don't despair, as Tom suggests an easy method to make your towels fluffy again using common kitchen ingredients. He advises: 'You can restore your cotton towels with three simple steps using just baking soda and white vinegar.' It might appear odd, yet white vinegar's acetic acid can counteract soap's alkaline build-up responsible for roughness, reports the Express. Moreover, white vinegar tackles soap remnants and trapped moisture, effectively eliminating any lingering odours. Baking soda is a natural solution to breaking down greasy residues and dissolving soap that white vinegar can't tackle, resulting in cleaner, softer towels. However, using white vinegar and baking soda requires two separate washes as they react with each other, reducing their effectiveness. To restore your towels' softness, start by washing them in warm water with white vinegar instead of fabric softener or laundry detergent. After the first wash, add baking soda to the detergent drawer for a second wash. Once washed, dry your towels naturally or tumble dry on low heat without fabric softener sheets. If possible, add wool balls to the tumble dryer to fluff up your towels. Tom stated: 'Wool dryer balls soften towels without the use of any chemicals. As we mentioned earlier, fabric softener and dryer sheets are to be avoided at all times, but especially with towels.' He added: 'These products leave a waxy build-up on your towels and in your machine that flatten fibres and minimize absorbency.' Following this method should leave your towels feeling soft and fluffy again without resorting to harsh chemical solutions or throwing them away
