SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary In the late 2000s, there were plenty of anime airing in the West that have been marked as classic gateway series for anime fans. Among these are immensely popular anime and manga, like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Soul Eater, Fairy Tail, and many more – however, few of these series had the unique impact and carried the same level of infamy as Yana Toboso's gothic historical fantasy, Black Butler.

While the first two seasons of the anime adaptation is exceptionally fun and does an excellent job at bringing Yana Toboso's lush spin on the Victorian-era to life, Black Butler suffers from many of the same issues that plague other anime adaptations from this time period, namely, the series deviates greatly from its source material, and not all the original content choices add anything of value to the story.

Taking place an entire year after the conclusion of season 1, which concluded the series with Sebastian presumably fulfilling his pact with Ciel and consuming his soul. However, as season 2 reveals, Sebastian was unsuccessful in eating Ciel's soul, however, the young earl did have his memory wiped, removing many crucial memories of the events from season 1.
