FOR almost three months, I paused my column writing due to my involvement in an evaluation study that required my full attention for proper implementation.
One unintended benefit of participating in this research was the opportunity to visit the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao , specifically Cotabato City and Lanao del Sur province, with my research colleague. I had not been to Cotabato City since late 2019, when the United Nations Population Fund asked me to assist the Bangsamoro Youth Commission in preparing its transition agenda.
This is an indication that the local economy is thriving. More hotels and shopping centers have been or are being constructed, like the Koronadal Commercial Corp. mall, the largest of the five KCC malls in Mindanao. I learned that the construction of this gigantic building, with a floor area of 170,000 square meters on 11-hectare land, began in 2020, but because of the pandemic, its completion had to be extended to September 2024.
