Leyland, Poulton-le-Fylde and Blackpool North in Lancashire had the most services axed out of any of the UK's top 1,000 busiest stations, with at least 13 per cent cancelled at all three.

Britain's worst railway stations were today revealed to be in the North West of England, with at least one in ten trains cancelled at 20 stations so far this year.

Northern Rail, which runs trains through all the worst stations among its network of 500 stops across northern England, has apologised - while Department for Transport officials admitted that rail users were 'being let down by poor services'. The UK's best performing station was Great Yarmouth in Norfolk at 0.3 per cent, then Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire at 0.7 per cent. These were followed by Clacton-on-Sea in Essex and Windsor & Eton Central in Berkshire, both at 0.8 per cent.

He added that was a 'chance for reform coming up', with the creation of Great British Railways , a new public sector body to hold responsibility for rail infrastructure and train operation. She explained the issue with Northern 'is related to the availability of train crew specifically on a Sunday', adding: 'One of the things we've had to do there whilst we work through resolving that with the trade union and local workers is we've actually decided to reduce the timetable slightly to improve reliability'.

'We are sorry for our recent performance': Northern Rail, which runs trains through all the worst 20 stations among its network of 500 stops across northern England, has apologised 'If it had been accepted, we believe that deal would have improved reliability in the short-term while we worked with the RMT to secure a longer-term agreement.

MailOnline understands ministers are continuing to meet with managing directors of the worst-performing train operators and their Network Rail counterparts, to address poor performance and raise standards. The data was compiled by On Time Trains, which logs a cancellation when a service with an arrival and/or departure at a station is axed.
