Odd Swans, Giants snubs as every club’s trio of AFL MVP nominees revealed

Three players from each club were put forward for the MVP Award as part of a two-stage voting process. Players nominated their teammates in stage one before selecting from a competition-wide field in stage two where players can’t vote for their own teammates.

There were no surprises most of the MVP nominees at the top-four clubs, although Josh Dunkley was nominated for Brisbane alongside co-captains Lachie Neale and Harris Andrews, with forwards Charlie Cameron and Joe Daniher overlooked. In other interesting nominations, Andrew Brayshaw got the nod ahead of Luke Jackson at Fremantle while Stephen Coniglio was nominated ahead of Tom Green. Jackson and Green, as well as Sydney’s Nick Blakey, were all named in the 44-man All-Australian squad on Monday, but aren’t in the running for the MVP award.

Unlike the AFL Rising Star award, the AFLPA best first-year player award can only be won by a player in their first year. But there’s no age limit on the award, hence 24-year-old Tylar Young is Richmond’s nominee.
