There’s not many artists who can easily tow the line between obnoxious and charming - but Charli manages it
As she stands on the Co-op Live stage in front of 23,500 devoted fans dressed to the nines in an assortment of lime green garments and oversized sunglasses on Wednesday night, Charli XCX stops for a rare moment of reflection during her crammed-full and energetic 90 minute show.
And barely one song into her support slot, Shygirl rushes off stage before emerging barefoot. “I jumped so hard I broke my boots,” she howls to the sea of mobile phone cameras before later thanking the up-for-it audience for giving her ‘this main character moment’. Having been casually joined with Shygirl for their remix of 365, Charli then pulls down the curtain to run through songs like Von Dutch and Rewind as she makes her way back-and-forth from the main stage to a B stage via an under-stage caged area to the delight of fans on either side.
The set list revolves mostly around the BRAT album with its remix counterpart getting a fair few mentions too. Highlights include Talk Talk, Guess and TikTok summer anthem Apple, which sees Charli dressed like a chain-smoking Morticia Addams if she was on The White Lotus. Rowdy anthem Spring Breakers also ends up being a big crowd-pleaser - and that’s perhaps in part down to yet another change in costume which sees Charli dressed like a character from the Muppets if they had been forced to raid a car wash machine for a last-minute outfit .
