The details of her remarkable life are probably less familiar.
On opening night last Friday, Constance Gold Parry did a wonderful job of bringing Gilman alive. Despite recurring bouts of depression she first suffered after giving birth — the basis ofShe’s shown forming tight bonds with the people closest to her, even Katherine , the daughter she abandoned. Mia M. Azuaje portrays Charlotte Perkins Gilman's daughter Katherine in the premiere of Ann Timmons' "Beyond the Yellow Wallpaper" at Echo Theatre., who plays Gilman’s lifelong best friend, Grace Ellery Channing, and with Jared Culpepper as her second husband, Houghton Gilman, is palpable. Culpepper also appears as Gilman’s first husband, Charles Walter Stetson, whom she left to break away from conventional expectations of her role in society.
We first meet her near the end of her life and hear about her advocacy of death with dignity, decades before it became a popular cause. Gilman is under contract to write her autobiography and is still scrambling to have her poems published.
