The two Mancunian icons performed at the intimate venue over two nights - and left their audiences entranced
As a lad who spent his student days screaming Champagne Supernova into an invisible mic on some grotty dancefloor or other - hands behind back, Gallagher sneer perfected - it’s impossible not to be mesmerised by the man’s mere presence on a Thursday night in Ardwick Green. It would be disingenuous to feign anything but giddiness.
These guys have such a fiercely loyal fanbase - young and old - the Manc mash-up was always going to be huge. “The people that are into the Stone Roses and Oasis and that kinda thing, I think they’ll f***ing love it,” Gallagher has said of the self-titled record. A far cry from the packed stadia the pair have played in years gone by, they’re met with an ear-splitting roar at the intimate Manchester venue, only surpassed by the sheer volume of what’s to come. As sure as eggs is eggs, the bellowing masses let out a familiar battle cry - ‘LIAM, LIAM’.
It’s a different, more mature Gallagher than the one who sauntered around Earls Court as his sibling’s pentatonic perfection entranced a 90s crowd. But it’s no less enthralling. Squire’s live slide guitar on Mother Nature’s Song gives the album closer a new dimension. Raise Your Hands is an ideal place to finish - save for an encore - despite being the opening track of the album.
