The two bands bring 'an avalanche of classics' to Manchester's newest music venue
There was once a time when Billy Corgan would have thumbed his nose at the idea of a nostalgia-tinged tour such as their Thursday night show at Co-op Live; the frontman and only consistent member of The Smashing Pumpkins has always been one to look forward rather than backwards, often confounding audiences by leaning on newer material and being stingy with the hits.
READ MORE: Greater Manchester Lidl store near Co-op Live honours Liam Gallagher with a blue plaque ahead of big shows The Pumpkins take the headline slot; this iteration of the group features 75% of the original line-up, with Corgan joined by powerhouse drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and guitarist James Iha, having buried the hatchet with the latter back in 2017; this is his first appearance with the band in Manchester since Halloween 2000.
The band play noisily, pointedly; there is almost a punk rock energy to proceedings, with the group re-energised by the arrival of new guitarist Kiki Wong, playing just her fourth show with them tonight.
