In today’s world, media holds unparalleled power. It shapes perceptions, influences behaviors, and ultimately, molds societal norms. Despite advancements in gender equality, women continue to be underrepresented and often stereotypically portrayed in media. This reality presents a unique opportunity for the creative community to lead a transformative change, rewriting the script on how women are perceived globally.
Deeply aware of these realities, I co-founded the SeeHer movement in 2016 with the goal of enhancing the accurate portrayal of women and girls in media in collaboration, in collaboration with the Association of National Advertisers and leading Fortune 500 companies. We created our Gender Equality Measure , which was embraced by over 100 major advertisers, boosting the accuracy of female portrayals by 82%.
A 2020 study by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media found that, in family films, male characters outnumber female characters by nearly 2 to 1. Moreover, women in leadership roles or in STEM fields are rarely depicted. This skewed representation has profound implications, influencing young girls’ aspirations and the public’s perception of women’s capabilities.
Redefining how women are portrayed in media is compulsory not just for moral reasons – it’s also good business. Studies show that diverse content attracts broader audiences and drives higher engagement. Authentic representation resonates with viewers, fosters brand loyalty, and enhances cultural relevance. Moreover, positive media portrayals can have a lasting societal impact. When young girls see women excelling in various fields, it expands their horizons and aspirations.
