A major cyberattack on Rhode Island's RIBridges system has potentially compromised the personal data of hundreds of thousands of residents. The state is working to notify affected individuals and provide free credit monitoring services.
Rhode Island officials announced Monday that a cyberattack compromised the state's RIBridges system, potentially exposing personal data of hundreds of thousands of residents. Governor Dan McKee and HealthSource RI Director Lindsay Lang revealed the breach at a State House briefing, stating that anyone impacted will receive letters by January outlining steps to access free credit monitoring. Officials confirmed that hackers were demanding a ransom but declined to provide further details.
The compromised system, which houses data related to Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, Childcare Assistance, Rhode Island Works, Long-term Services and Supports, and HealthSource RI health insurance, was taken offline two weeks ago following a warning from Deloitte, the state's vendor. The state has established a call center for residents to seek information about the breach and protective measures. The call center is operational from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and can be reached at 833-918-6603.
