Richard Osman thought his House of Games was in line for a BAFTA, despite previously admitting it 'could not matter less'
Richard Osman believed "this is it" just moments before missing out on a BAFTA Award. The 55 year old had been nominated in the Daytime TV category for his BBC quiz programme House of Games.
It represented Richard's final opportunity to claim the coveted accolade with the show, having recently stepped down after nine years as presenter. Later this year, he will pass the baton to Hollywood actor Michael Sheen. Richard had previously admitted it "would be fun" to win, having been shortlisted in the same category the previous year. On that occasion, however, Clive Myrie's Caribbean Adventure claimed the prize.
This year Richard faced stiff competition from Scam Interceptors, Lorraine, and The Chase in the fiercely contested category. For a brief moment, the television personality believed he might actually be walking away with a gong. Speaking on his The Rest is Entertainment podcast, Richard said: "I did think maybe a sympathy Bafta but nothing.
This is how these award ceremony works, I was giving out an award as well, to Martin Lewis, and when you do that, someone comes to get you from your seat to take you around to the back in advance of you doing it.
"But the one I was giving out was quite soon after the Daytime Bafta and she said, 'Oh, of course, if you've won, then actually I'll collect you from the side of the stage, not the audience'. "And as we were getting closer to our award, we hadn't been collected, I thought, 'Oh my God, this is it, we've finally done it, this team, this wonderful team, I'm going to leave them with a Bafta after nine years of incredible work'.
" Regrettably for Richard, Scam Interceptors ultimately claimed the Bafta. He added: "I'd like to say we had a fun evening, but even then. I was delighted that Scam Interceptors won it.
" Richard has formerly disclosed the peculiar motivation behind his desire to secure a BAFTA. Last year, he stated: "It could not matter less if you win, but when you're there and some people have just won, you think, 'Maybe it would be fun to win, I have sat through three and a half hours of this and I do really need a wee'.
"If you win, you get to go backstage so you don't have to watch the rest of it. That's the thing, if you win, you're on stage and then you go and do the press conference.
"You're literally thinking, 'If we win, first, we've won a BAFTA, which would be nice, but more importantly, I don't have to watch the rest of the show, I've done two-and-a-half hours and I've clapped lots of people' but anyway, we didn't. " Over the weekend, Richard presented Martin Lewis with the BAFTA Special Award. Upon accepting the accolade for his ITV programme, Martin quipped that it was "a PowerPoint presentation with a Q&A afterwards".
