The Nottingham athlete feels more needs to be done to make sport inclusive for everyone

Today we are running a number of stories to highlight the lives of disabled people in and around our area. Disabled people make up 24% of the UK population, so it’s important to us that our content, whether about them, by them, or supporting them, is useful and relevant.

Amazon Prime released the documentary 'Dare to Defy' on Tuesday, December 3, to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The three-part series looks at how the marathon world record holder challenges stereotypes in sports and explores barriers faced by underrepresented communities when it comes to participation.

Richard, who broke his own world record in October when completing his 80th marathon, also explains that a key issue is that "there are not enough opportunities" for people with disabilities to participate in sport events, and often there are limited places and resources. Adding: "Do I see enough people like me training or participating in events in my own city, definitely not.

"As a result of my cancer journey and having a stoma, I feel privileged to now be part of the non-visible disability community. It’s really helped me see the world with a new perspective, especially when it comes to getting active and I hope to help make sport more accessible."
