A crisis is engulfing Richmond as the race heats up for out-of-contract AFL star Liam Baker. Former Richmond premiership captain Trent Cotchin thrusted Baker’s future on the agenda during Channel 7’s Talking Footy, saying Baker and champion Dustin Martin might not be at Punt Road Oval next year. “The numbers that I’m hearing from the west are pretty significant,” Cotchin said on Wednesday night.
And the new list manager of the Eagles, Matt Clarke, spent a long time at the Tigers and I couldn’t see that happening given relationships in footy. “But if the Eagles want to get ruthless, that option is there to push him through and not give up a single draft pick for Liam Baker.” Baker is also likely to be offered a big-money deal as the salary cap is about to explode for each club, up from just over $13.5 million to nearly $18 million.
