Rick & Morty creator and voice actor Justin Roiland's firing sparked internet debate over who would replace him on the show. As season seven begins, what's the verdict?
When the team behind hit animated TV show Rick & Morty fired Justin Roiland ahead of the release of season seven, fans had questions. The new season is the first without creator/voice actor Justin RoilandMost notably, they wondered how the show could continue without him, given that Roiland was not only the co-creator of the show but also the voice behind both Rick and Morty, the show's stars.
Critics noted his departure would have little impact on the writing process, there was still the question of who would take his place in the voice cast. The hit show with the complicated past A sweary blend of high-brow ideas and low-brow gags, it follows a misanthropic alcoholic genius named Rick Sanchez who drags his put-upon grandson Morty along on a series of increasingly insane adventures through their universe and the parallel universes beyond. Its popularity has spawned a rabid and at times toxic fanbase.
On Roiland's other hit animated show Solar Opposites, producers opt not to find an exact soundalike to replace him as lead character Korvo, instead going with Dan Stevens and referencing the change with a throwaway gag before moving on.But it's fair to say the voices of Rick and Morty are far more iconic than Korvo, and nothing but precise imitations were going to cut it.
