Government aims to end fit or not fit to work categories
those signed off work with long-term health conditions and hinted strict benefit assessments could be softened.
The Government’s “Get Britain Working Again” white paper has said it would address the 2.8 million people out of work due to long-term sickness through health support and Jobcentre reform. “The current system focuses on assessing capacity to work instead of on helping people to adjust and adapt to their health condition,” the white paper said.
The Government said it would retain promised savings, pledged under the former administration by reforming the work capability assessment test which deems whether someone with a health condition or disability is fit to work. Kendall has also said that young people would have welfare cut if they do not take up work or education opportunities.
“We want the time people spend with their work coach and careers adviser to be as employment-focused and forward looking as possible,” the document said “rather than focused on checking compliance with benefits requirements”.
