League of Legends players faced significant progression hurdles after recent changes aimed to simplify the game's reward system. Riot Games has acknowledged the mistakes and is working to revert the negative impact on players.

Riot Games has acknowledged its recent changes to League of Legends' reward system s were a misstep, significantly slowing down player progression and access to new content. The changes, implemented in November 2024, aimed to simplify the reward structure by consolidating it onto the free track of the game's battle passes. However, the intended outcome was drastically different from the player experience.

\Players reported a considerable slowdown in leveling up and unlocking new champions, finding it took significantly longer to reach level 30 and acquire the 20 champions required for ranked play. An analysis by Riot revealed that, while the changes worked as intended for less engaged players, those who invested more time in the game saw a substantial decrease in Blue Essence (in-game currency) earning rates. Super high engagement players experienced a 71% reduction in their Blue Essence earn rate. \ Riot Games has taken responsibility for the issue, attributing the problems to an error in their calculations. They failed to account for the First Win of the Day (FWotD) experience bonus and its impact on both Blue Essence income and Champion Capsule access. Riot is planning to address these issues with significant increases in Blue Essence earn rates on the free battle pass track, expected to go live in patch 25.S1.2. Additionally, a one-time mission will grant players 4,250 Blue Essence to compensate for the shortfall. Account XP earn rates will also be boosted by 40% to ensure the number of games needed to reach level 30 and access ranked play remains comparable to the pre-patch state. \While Riot is working to rectify the situation, player dissatisfaction is widespread. Many are calling for a complete reversion to the previous reward system or, at the very least, the return of Hextech Chests. Riot has committed to investigating the root cause of this error to prevent similar issues in the future and has apologized for the shortcomings in both the numerical tuning and communication surrounding the changes.
