'The cause of many a Manchester journalist’s hangover from the 1970s to the 2010s was George Archondogeorge'

It was an era when Manchester had the Other Fleet Street; the city's soccer stars boozed in back alley pubs, and so did police and villains.

As Sean Brett, landlord of the city's Old Nag's Head in Jackson Row, says: "George Archondogeorge was a lovely pal, and great landlord, and a friend to many, I shall raise a glass tonight." George also ran the Moonraker Club in Hanging Ditch - another foxhole for journalists. He was also landlord of The Circus Tavern on Portland Street, The Sir Ralph Abercromby in Bootle Street, and The Town Hall Tavern in Tib Street. Pictures of famous and infamous who walked into his establishments would adorn the walls.

"He was as mad as a box of frogs but he was lovely. He always used to come into my pub on a Saturday and have a couple of pints and every time he put a beer to his mouth he would say 'cheers'. Ex News of the World reporter, Alan Hart, also recalled the furniture burning story. “One cold winter's night, a customer was huddled in front of a sparse fire. He complained to George about the pub being cold. George asked him to stand up and, when he did, George broke the chair the drinker had been sitting on over his knee and threw the pieces on the fire, telling the astonished customer ‘it will be warmer now’.

George Dearsley, writing for The Drone, said: "In more recent years I and a couple of colleagues were up from London and I showed them the delights of the old Manchester drinking haunts. It was late, and our last port of call was The Circus Tavern. Alas, the towels were up. But then a booming voice called out: “We’re closed, baby,” in a Manchester twang tinged with Greek.
