Sunak should follow the leadership example of Harry Kane. Be prepared to take that penalty. Be brave enough to fail
The sinking feeling that millions of us had whenon Saturday night was only partly to do with our bemusement that a footballer who is paid £200,000 a week can’t kick a stationary ball into an area of 192 square feet from a distance of 12 yards. It was a more profound realisation that, in that moment, our escapist vision of England winning the World Cup was over, and we were left to face a rather brutal reality much closer to home.
Postal workers, nurses, bus drivers, railway workers, teachers, border security staff, civil servants –. Now, even if you never send a letter, you’re perfectly healthy, you don’t have a child at school, you don’t plan to go anywhere this Christmas by train, plane or bus, and you don’t need a new driving licence or a rural subsidy payment, this is clearly a sub-optimal state of affairs.
But even among those who are inconvenienced by this wave of industrial action, there is a measure of sympathy for the strikers, who, crudely, would like their wages to go up by the same amount as a loaf of bread. Attempts by the Government to whip up public resentment for the strikers have, largely, failed, and this is particularly true when it comes to the railways.
