The Prime Minister appears serious and engaged at the big boys’ table. Keir Starmer, in Opposition, inevitably does not
Any prime ministerial entourage will contain at least one adviser who is responsible for reminding their colleagues that there are no domestic votes to be won in foreign affairs. As political adages go, it has the virtue of being true except in two circumstances: when it’s not, and when you have no choice. History will judge into which categoryHamas’s attack on Israel
The British government has engaged with regional leaders but also those further afield, including enduring allies like the United States and France, and heavyweights like Germany and Turkey. Britain’s stance is clear: Israel has been attacked, Israel is our friend, and we will help Israel to do the right thing.
When there was an angry flashfire of grief over an explosion at a Gaza hospital on Tuesday, Sunak was careful to reserve judgement on who was responsible. It was wise of the Prime Minister not to join a headlong scramble in any direction. This can help create an aura of fundamental seriousness, and, unlike most political messaging, it almost does the work for you. Sunak does not need to say anything as crude as “I was discussing stuff I can’t even talk about with James Bond’s boss while Keir Starmer was dealing with toxic tweets from local councillors,” because we have already thought it. Sunak is serious and engaged at the big boys’ table. Starmer, inevitably, is not.
