into Johnson’s “Partygate” conduct is set to suck yet more oxygen away from Sunak’s attempts to focus on his five pledges, and his pitch to voters that he’s running a “new”, pragmatic Government.
Labour is already licking its lips at such a prospect. If the ex-PM is turfed out by his constituents, that’s a big win. But even if he wins , some in Labour privately say that could be just as damaging an outcome as he would “haunt Rishi with a comeback”. Although matters of standards are subject to a free vote, not a whipped one, the PM could send a clear personal message by voting for the strongest possible sanction against Johnson. His troops could, albeit informally, follow that lead.
As I write, it’s unclear whether Alok Sharma will delay a peerage and avoid a by-election. But Nadine Dorries’ decision to step down with immediate effect proves that if Sunak fails to root out his critics, they will make life difficult for him.
