The number of people moving to Britain each year has continued to rise despite Brexit, which saw EU citizens lose the automatic right to settle in the UK, with growing numbers of foreign students and refugee schemes for the citizens of Ukraine and Hong Kong seen as major factors.
Ministers, including the Chancellor, Health Secretary and Education Secretary, are understood to support the use of migration to fill labour shortages, boost universities and promote GDP growth.Council of Europe this week to press allies for reform of the European Convention on Human Rights so that legal challenges can no longer be used to block the deportation of individual migrants from the UK.
He said: “Multiple other countries supported our position that this is an important topic that needs us all to work closely together.” Mr Sunak is also negotiating a deal for formal co-operation between Britain and Frontex, the EU’s borders agency, intended to reduce the number of asylum seekers travelling across the continent rather than seeking refugee status as soon as they arrive in a safe country.
