Right now, parents who can afford a holiday and a car should not be the priority
I have a very clear memory of, aged about seven, walking around the corner to pick up the family allowance from the post office. Standing beside stacks of envelopes and boxes of ready salted crisps, I remember waiting for the £10 plus change to be passed across the counter, which I would then take home to my mum, minus the small concession of 10p for a fizzy strawberry lace.

Before I move on too quickly from that £651m figure, that means that if you counted Rishi Sunak’s money, at a rate of a pound every second, without any breaks, it would take you over 20 years just to count the amount of money he and his wife have. This, you see, is the man who thinks that households should be able to earn £120,000 and still receive child benefit at the same rate as someone earning £15,000 a year.
It won’t put food on the table, heat the bedrooms or buy the school shoes for the millions of families struggling to survive after 14 years of Tory government. It looks like little more than eyelash-fluttering at a dissatisfied but undecided middle-class voter at the expense, yet again, of our country’s most vulnerable and most punished.
