The Conservatives’ new “playground” attack line branding Sir Keir Starmer “Sir Softy” may backfire by focusing attention on the Government’s record on combating crime, according to political strategists RichardVaughan1 reports
as he attempted to highlight the Labour leader’s performance when he was director of public prosecutions.when Mr Sunak said it on Wednesday, with even members on Mr Sunak’s own backbenches mildly embarrassed by it.
But political strategists have questioned the logic of Mr Sunak focusing on the issue of crime, given the public’s view of the Government’s track record on the issue since it has been in power. Ed Dorrell, director at political strategy firm Public First, said the Conservatives regularly referenced the Labour leader’s knighthood as focus groups with the public often revealed that people believe it shows Sir Keir as a “part of the establishment”.
