In remembering Brianna, we can remember who we are, and the moment that changed us
For many of us, the moment that changed our life was one of either great cruelty or great compassion: the violence, the abuse we suffered, or the good Samaritan who helped us – the love someone showed us.
As I watched the spectacle in the Commons, a speech flooded back to me. It was made in early January 2017, in the days before Trump was sworn in. This was not the first time either Sunak or his allies have made such quips; nor the first time they have attempted to pursue policies against this community. No, the disgust arose now because it affected a grieving mother and father.. Number 10 has doubled down. Kemi Badenoch, his Business Secretary, has further entrenched the position, accusing Starmer of “political point-scoring”.
It sends out a signal far greater than even the person speaking realises, that gender-nonconforming people are less than, disgusting, other, alien, inhuman, the enemy.
