The Chancellor faced pressure to impose a windfall tax

After facing pressure to impose a windfall tax on the soaring profits of oil and gas firms to fund a relief package for households struggling with rising bills Rishi Sunak has announced emergency measures.

As well as the universal payment there was targeted support for the poorest, the elderly and the disabled.
