Bathing water sites welcome their new designation - but warn much work is needed to ensure pollution levels are reduced

Four wild swimming spots along the River Dart in Devon that suffer from high levels of sewage pollution have been designated by the Government as “

These sites will be monitored during bathing season, which runs between Wednesday 15 May and Thursday 30 September. The River Dart at Steamer Quay, Totnes, meanwhile had 61 dumps over 142 hours with 15 dumps over 127 hours at Warfleet. The bathing site designation is intended to improve that, but, while the status has improved the quality of water at coastal areas, the record of rivers that have been given bath status has remained poor.

"Designation can drive water company investment to tackle poorly performing storm overflows and stir local nature restoration action, such as woodland and wetland creation, to clean up pollution. Designated bathing water sites are regularly monitored by the Environment Agency, which assesses whether action is needed to cut pollution levels and works with local communities, farmers and water companies to improve water quality.
