Rivian's rethinking how accessories and a hitch assembly integrate onto a vehicle.
A Rivian patent application for this feature was published by theJul. 4, 2024, but was filed by Rivian in late 2022. In the document, Rivian details use of two brackets to hold accessories, which attach to each other using a set of pins.One bracket is mounted to the vehicle, while a second slides into it and is retained by the pins. The second bracket serves as the attachment point for accessories, which can include things like cargo carriers or bike racks, Rivian says in the application.
The same assembly could also be used for trailers, Rivian adds, and unlike a conventional trailer hitch. That allows for increased departure angles while towing a trailer, making this hardware perfect for overlanding.Accessories could be attached an detached manually, or electronically via a connection to a vehicle's touchscreen or steering wheel controls, Rivian suggests.
