Mick Lynch, the high-profile general secretary of the RMT union, will step down in May after leading numerous strikes against train operators.

Mick Lynch today revealed he will retire from the Rail, Maritime and Transport union union aged 63 after four years as its £130,000-a-year general secretary.

But the RMT strikes along with those held by fellow rail unions Aslef and the TSSA since 2022 cost UK hospitality businesses £5billion, according to industry figures. Mr Lynch joined the RMT after he began working for Eurostar in 1993, and said he was proud to have been both a rank-and-file member and an elected officer.Empty platforms at London King's Cross railway station in August 2022 during an RMT strikeIn a statement released this afternoon, Mr Lynch said: 'It has been a privilege to serve this union for over 30 years in all capacities, but now it is time for change.

He led a series of strikes over pay and conditions under the previous Conservative government which caused huge disruption for passengers.
