The campaign for independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has filed a federal lawsuit over his qualification for Nevada's ballot this November.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent candidate for president, announces he has qualified for the 2024 presidential ballot in Utah, Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024, at a campaign event in Salt Lake City. Utah is the first state where Kennedy has met all the requirements to appear on the ballot.

The office of Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar approved the circulation of Kennedy's nomination petition in January without a vice presidential candidate, the complaint alleges. "This is a clear case for the federal court to apply the doctrine of equitable estoppel to prohibit the Secretary of State from changing his mind after providing binding statutory instruction upon which the campaign properly relied to our detriment," Kennedy campaign senior counsel Paul Rossi said in a statement.

"Nevada has a rich history of independent and third party candidates for office," Aguilar said in a statement. "Each of those candidates managed to attain ballot access by following the law. We look forward to seeing Mr. Kennedy’s team in court."an independent candidate for president, the candidate must "file with the Secretary of State a declaration of candidacy and a petition of candidacy, in which the person must also designate a nominee for Vice President.
