There is no sane world in which we should know Robert Jenrick’s name
, the party still has the ability to surprise us. It’s an extraordinary accomplishment, in its way. You would have thought that by this time we’d be jaded cynics, shrugging off whatever latest foolishness they’d demonstrated. But even now, years after they elected Liz Truss as leader, they still have the ability to astonish.is currently in the lead of the contest to be the next Tory leader. That seems such an absurd sentence that you presume it can’t possibly be true, but it is.
It now appears that Jenrick is the man to beat, although recent polling shows the membership still prefers Badenoch. . This is a man with the charisma of faded wallpaper. He succeeds simply because he refuses to challenge hard-right orthodoxy. He ignores the voters the Tories lost to Labour and the Liberal Democrats, and instead fixates on those it lost to Reform.
She wants to challenge “destructive identity politics” and “a postmodernism that can best be described as joyless decadence”. I have no idea which group of voters that final phrase is aimed at. I have no idea what it is even supposed to mean. But regardless: an election-winning motto it is not. Badenoch speaks to the hyper-online cantankerous right. She doesn’t have the slightest idea how to speak to voters. It is hard to imagine a candidate further removed from where the Tories need to be.
