Wolfgang Van Halen -- son of the late Eddie Van Halen -- is having more success than he expected, at least initially, after the first two albums from his own Mammoth WVH project. He brings the group to town on Wednesday, July 24, at the MGM Northfield Park casino and resort.

Mammoth WVH, a solo recording entity and a touring band, has been a hit out of the box. Both of its albums, 2021′s self-titled debut and last year’s “Mammoth II” have topped Billboard’s Mainstream Rock, Hard Rock and Indie charts. They’ve also spawned five Top 10 Mainstream Rock singles, including “Distance” and “Don’t Back Down” at No. 1. The group has also opened in stadiums for Metallica and Guns N’ Roses and is currently out on its first full-fledged run as a headliner in its own right.

“Mammoth II,” Van Halen notes, is an album that touches on more recent life events, including his father’s death in 2020, than the debut. “The first album, I had been sort of working it for awhile as this kind of first impression and trying to figure out who I was,” Van Halen explains.

“And then even songs like ‘Optimist,’ the fact that it’s in 7/4, in an odd time signature, is where my Tool influence kind of pokes through a little bit. So it was fun to kind of relax a little bit and let my instincts take over.” “I’m honestly happy just to be a part of it, to have an opportunity to play a super small part in it,” Van Halen says. “It was a really, really wonderful opportunity. I knew was good just from being involved in it and seeing what I was able to see, but to see it, specifically the song I played on, blow up as much as it did was pretty crazy.
