Randy Vasquez allows five runs in 3⅔ innings; Xander Bogaerts, Jurickson Profar and Jackson Merrill homer for 3 of Padres' 4 hits
The air was let out of Petco Park on Monday. A trio of home runs and a bunch of walks inflated it for brief periods, but the Padres offense could not overcome an early deficit and lost 5-4 to the Rockies. A weekend series against the Dodgers felt at times like the postseason arrived early. Superb pitching, especially by the Padres starters, helped the Padres to a series victory over one of baseball’s best teams.
And after getting to 3-0 and taking a strike, Campusano sent a soft liner to Doyle in center field that ended the inning. Against Jalen Beeks in the ninth, Ha-Seong Kim drew a leadoff walk and Tatis and Cronenworth reached on one-out walks before Manny Machado grounded into a game-ending double play on the first pitch he saw. Certainly, the offensive output could be lamented. But the game followed a familiar pattern.
